Rare Book “Wunderwelten” by Friedrich Wilhelm Mader (German Text)

A Pioneer of Space Fiction: The 1911 Epic That Predicted the Future.”

In Wunderwelten, Mader takes readers on an incredible voyage that predates the modern space age by half a century. Long before NASA, Mader envisioned a crew of adventurers traveling through the solar system in a spherical spaceship called the Sannah.

  • The Plot: Six brave explorers’ journey to the Moon, Mars, and Saturn before being swept away by a comet into the depths of interstellar space, eventually discovering a paradise planet orbiting Alpha Centauri.

  • The Legacy: For science fiction collectors, Mader is a crucial link between the adventure stories of Jules Verne and the “Hard Science Fiction” of the mid-20th century. He was one of the first authors to use actual mathematical and astronomical data to make his fictional space travel feel “real.”

  • Genre: Classic Science Fiction / Space Opera

  • Key Themes: Interplanetary travel, Mars civilization, early 20th-century futurism.

  • Format: Hard cover 326 pages – 12.5 x 15cm 8 full page colour plates

  • Condition:  Complete with all 8 original color plates by Willi Egler. While the volume contains unobtrusive institutional markings from a previous school library environment, the iconic illustrations remain vivid and free of stamps.

  • Two pages with tears (see images) Yellowing of all pages

Rare 1911 First Edition of Mader’s “Wunderwelte

This first edition of Wunderwelten by Friedrich Wilhelm Mader complete with 8 Willi Egler colour plates is a cornerstone of German ‘Utopischer Roman’ (Utopian Fiction). Often compared to Jules Verne, Mader’s epic follows Lord Flitmore and his crew aboard the spherical Sannah as they journey from the Moon to the paradise of Alpha Centauri.

Plates

The Launch of the Sannah: Usually the frontispiece or near the start, showing the spherical ship departing Earth.

The Lunar Landscape: A haunting depiction of the Moon’s surface.

The Dying World of Mars: Often showing the canals or ancient Martian architecture.

The Rings of Saturn: A spectacular view of the spaceship navigating the icy debris of the rings.

The Comet’s Tail: The ship being “captured” and swept into deep space.

Interstellar Void: A dramatic image of the stars and the immense scale of the journey.

Arrival at Eden: The first glimpse of the paradise planet orbiting Alpha Centauri.

The Advanced Society: A scene showing the utopian civilization of the “Edenites.”
