Between 1913 and 1930, Jung underwent a period of intense inner turmoil, which he later called his “confrontation with the unconscious.”

During this time, he practiced what he termed active imagination—a method of engaging with inner images and fantasies as if they were real, autonomous figures.

He recorded these experiences in a series of journals known as the Black Books, which he later transcribed and elaborated upon in a large, red leather-bound volume—hence the name The Red Book.

The book is filled with calligraphic text, symbolic paintings, and mythopoetic narratives, resembling a medieval illuminated manuscript.

Psychological and Historical Significance

  • The Red Book is the source text for many of Jung’s later theories, including:
    • Archetypes
    • The Collective Unconscious
    • Individuation—the process of psychological integration and self-realization
  • Jung never published the book in his lifetime, fearing it would damage his professional reputation. It remained in a Swiss bank vault until its posthumous release.
  • The work is both autobiographical and mythological, blending personal visions with universal themes of transformation, death, rebirth, and the divine.

📚 Sonu Shamdasani’s Role

  • Shamdasani, a historian of psychology, was instrumental in bringing The Red Book to light.
  • He edited, introduced, and co-translated the work, providing extensive historical and psychological context.
  • His introduction situates the book within Jung’s life and the broader intellectual currents of the early 20th century, making it accessible to both scholars and general readers
